The Varsity Football Team (6-3, 3-1 in league) earned a commanding 48-28 victory over the rival Vikings on Friday (Oct. 19). With this win, the Bears move one step closer to securing a second-place finish in the San Gabriel Valley League (first-place belonging to the Paramount Pirates). This also ensures the Bears a spot in CIF.
This victory was the first time in 20 years since the Bears beat the Vikings at Downey (1998 was the previous occasion in which this happened). To earn this redemption win, the Bears were dominant on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Chris Venegas completed 18 of 23 passes for 249 yards and 5 touchdowns. Keison Evans and Desmond Carnes both pulled in two touchdown passes and Jabari Hughes reeled in one TD pass. The fifth touchdown for the Bears came off a 3-yard run by Arvionte Sheffield, who also helped get the momentum going in Warren’s direction off an early interception that led to a 14-7 lead for the Bears.
Securing the win always feels good, but this one is made that much sweeter knowing that it was done in front of a capacity crowd in a hostile rival environment. A portion of the Bears’ stands was filled with alumni from the class of 1960, cheering on today’s bright young stars. Following the game, the alumni beamed with pride, celebrating this victory as though it were their own!
This one belongs to all of the Bears, past and present!
