Girls Tennis wrapped up SGVL play today with the conclusion of the league tournament. The Bears represented brilliantly, earning top honors in both singles and doubles.
Clara Kim (12) and Victoria Recinos (11), the Bears’ top two singles players, faced off against each other in the championship match. Both ladies performed phenomenally, showcasing long rallies and winning shots. Ultimately, Kim came out on top, but both Kim and Recinos will represent SGVL in CIF play.
Doubles team Kailyn Lorberter (12) and Ximena Ramos (12) secured back-to-back tournament championships, winning the doubles tounrnament in 2017 and 2018. Lorberter and Ramos showed tremendous grit and resilience just to qualify for the finals, winning the second and third sets after dropping the first. The third set was a 10-point tiebreaker in which the Bears’ doubles team came back from 5-9 to win 11-9. This dynamic duo now looks forward to their return to CIF action.
For Coach Starksen, she has managed to send at least one Bear to CIF to represent the SGVL every year except one throughout her storied coaching career. Although this is a phenomenal feat and testament to Starksen’s coaching prowess, she humbly gives all of the credit to the fantastic student-athletes with whom she has the pleasure of working.
